201 stainless steel is often promoted as a budget-friendly alternative to higher grades like 304 and 316L, but the critical question for engineers, manufacturers, and buyers is whether its performance represents a cost-saving advantage or a compromise in long-term reliability. Mechanical Properties

201 stainless steel demonstrates respectable mechanical strength for its class.

The most notable compromise lies in corrosion performance:

  • Manganese Content: 5.5–7.5% (added to replace nickel)

Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) shows that 201 stainless steel may develop red rust in 24–96 hours, compared to over 1000 hours for 304. This makes 201 suitable for indoor or dry environments, but less reliable in marine, humid, or chloride-rich settings.

 

Thermal Properties

  • Oxidation Resistance: ~790 °C (continuous service)

While thermal resistance is adequate for household appliances or indoor panels, it is inferior to 304 or 316L, which withstand higher continuous temperatures without scaling.

 

Cost Advantage

The strongest argument for 201 stainless steel remains cost.

  • Relative Cost: ~40–50% lower than 304 stainless steel
  • Availability: Widely produced, especially in Asia, which reduces lead times

This affordability makes 201 a preferred choice for low-cost consumer goods, decorative applications, and areas where corrosion risk is minimal.
